Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, today's dentures look natural and feel comfortable.
What are dentures?
A denture is a removable prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth and associated gum loss. It is essentially a plate, made from acrylic or chrome cobalt that supports one or more artificial teeth. Dentures are custom made from impressions take of your mouth, and while it will take a bit of practice at first, you’ll be able to eat the foods you love and feel a renewed sense of confidence.

Types of dentures
There are four different types of dentures. We’ll help you determine which type of denture is right for you based on how many teeth need replacing as well as other factors such as your lifestyle and budget.

Fixed bridge
A fixed bridge, or fixed partial denture is where one or more artificial teeth are held between healthy teeth on each sides. A fixed bridge cannot be taken out by yourself. Read more about dental bridges here.

Partial denture
A Partial denture, or removable partial denture, is where one or more artificial teeth are held in place with clasps that fit onto nearby healthy teeth. You can take the false teeth out yourself, for cleaning and at night.

Complete dentures
Complete dentures are those which we’re primarily familiar with. Full or complete dentures are a removable device used to replace missing teeth.

Dental implants
Dental implants are used to support artificial teeth or a fixed bridge. Your dentist will put a small screw into your jawbone. Over time, the screw will integrate with the bone around it and will act as an anchor to hold one or more false teeth in place.

What is the denture treatment process?
Transitioning to dentures is a process, which involves a few stages and procedures. At Smiles of Lalor, we’re committed to making your experience as efficient and comfortable as possible.

01. Treatment consultation
The first stage involves a thorough examination of your mouth and jawbone. Scans and x-rays are done to ensure there are no underlying issues and to help your dentist assess what kind of dentures may be right for you. During this consultation we’ll discuss the advantages and limitations of dentures and develop a treatment plan.

02. Dental impressions
The next step is to make a mould of your teeth. Dentures are custom made by a specialist technician, so this mould along with your scans and x-rays is then passed on to them for manufacturing.

03. Trial fitting and adjustment

04. Final fitting
Your final appointment will end with you leaving with your brand-new set of dentures. During this appointment we will provide you with information on how to care for your dentures and advice for getting used to eating and talking like normal.

Immediate dentures
In the scenario where you may need to have your remaining teeth extracted, you will be given a new denture on the same day, so you don’t need to go without teeth while your denture is being made. Making an immediate denture bypasses the trial fitting stages, so is not ideal, but provides a good short-term solution.
