Hidden Cavity Risks

Updated: Jun 26

You brush daily and even remember to floss your teeth most of the time. Plus, you’re great about avoiding lollies and other sweets. So why do you seem to get cavities more often than what seems normal?

It turns out there may be some hidden cavity risks you’re not very familiar with. Understanding what they are, how to manage them, and when to get the help of our Smiles of Lalor dentist can help you reduce your need for dental work in the future.

Your Teeth Are What You… Drink

Some of the biggest cavity-causing beverages are sports drinks. If you’re a health-savvy individual or reach for the sports drinks during your weekend recreation, take note. Many of these beverages have just as much — if not more — sugar than a regular soda.

Even if you’re drinking “sugar free” or diet drinks, the sweeteners and acidic pH can cause acid levels to rise, damaging your tooth enamel.

Plus, since they’re liquids, the coat all surfaces of your teeth. Areas between your teeth as well as deep grooves and fissures are challenging to clean. When acidic or sweet beverages seep into them on a day-to-day basis, you’ll be more at-risk to get cavities there.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

What can cause dry mouth? Anything from the over-the-counter medication you’re taking (especially decongestants or allergy meds) to the caffeinated drink you have each morning. Xerostomia is also a side-effect of cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy.
